Description & Details
MAGAZINE. A quarterly roots music journal printed on 160 pages of high-quality, 100 percent recycled paper, using biodegradable ink.
No Depression started it's life as a quarterly print magazine in 1995, fueled by it's founding editors' passion for alt-country music and long-form journalism.
Over the course of it's first print run, it helped solidify the importance of Americana and roots music on the national stage. In the years since, No Depression has developed a robust web publication, publishing long features, honest criticism, and weekly columns in addition to it's wealth of community-driven content.
In 2015, to celebrate the publication's 20th anniversary, the FreshGrass Foundation brought it back to print as a high-end, ad-free, quarterly journal focused once again on long-form music journalism.
Talk of international music often veers either toward vague "world music" or the ways in which artists around the world interpret American music. Here at No Depression, though, we prefer to focus on how traditional music is being updated to inspire new art. So, for our Summer international issue, "Over Yonder," we're exploring music culture around the world, seeking innovative artists who revitalize tradition for contemporary audiences.
Among them: Aboriginal songwriters in Australia who blend indigenous music culture with acoustic guitars, a Chinese band that attacks ancient-style stringed instruments with punk-like fervor, an American expat who has found a new voice over a decade in Argentina, and so on.
